609 Dispute Letter: What It Is and When It Actually Works
The '609 letter' is one of the most-talked-about credit repair tactics online — and one of the most misunderstood. Here's what Section 609 of the FCRA actually says, when it works, and when you're better off using a standard dispute.
What Section 609 actually says
Section 609 gives you the right to request the source documents a credit bureau used to verify any item on your report. It does NOT, by itself, require deletion. The reason 609 letters sometimes work: if the bureau can't produce verification documents, the item must be deleted under Section 611.
When a 609 letter works best
- Old collections where the original creditor's records are likely gone
- Charge-offs that have been sold multiple times
- Items already disputed once and 'verified' with no detail
When to skip 609 and use a standard dispute
If you have hard proof an item is wrong (paid receipt, settlement letter, identity theft report), a standard FCRA Section 611 dispute with that evidence attached is faster and more effective.
